OBAS was conceptualised by an experienced team of anaesthetists in response to the requests of proceduralists to provide anaesthesia services in their offices. Although there were no Australian models, there was ample evidence from the USA that this was a safe and viable practice. In order to introduce this as a new care model in Australia, with patient safety as the number one priority, detailed policies based on accepted guidelines were established.
Currently, OBAS supports dental or specialist offices with modern monitoring and anaesthetic equipment. The first OBAS centre was opened in September 2013, and has been embraced by both patients and practitioners alike. As part of their commitment to safety, OBAS participates in an ongoing quality assurance program with data collection in accordance with the Society of Ambulatory Anesthesia audit tool from the USA, which allows benchmarking OBAS against leading US office based surgical centres.
The founding members of OBAS are full time anaesthetists with public and private hospital appointments. They have extensive training and experience in all aspects of clinical anaesthesia.
